St Margaret's Bay Telephone Repeater Station

St Margaret’s Bay played an important role in the development of early international telecommunications because of its close proximity to the French coast. On 1 April 1891, the first telephone cable connecting Britain with another country was opened between St Margaret’s Bay and Sangatte in France. This followed earlier attempts to establish an undersea telegraph connection across the Channel, including a cable between the South Foreland area and Ostend and Calais. Although the first attempt in 1850 failed shortly after being laid, a replacement cable opened in 1851 and became the first commercially successful submarine cable in the world.

The 1891 telephone cable represented another major milestone, becoming the first subsea telephone cable to connect two different countries. It was installed by the General Post Office cable ship HMTS Monarch, with the work taking place during difficult winter conditions. The cable was eventually replaced in 1930 as telecommunications technology developed. Two years later, a substantial repeater station was constructed on Bay Hill at St Margaret’s Bay to support the international cable system and strengthen the telephone connection between Britain and France.

The repeater station was constructed by Hammond and Co, with contemporary reports recording the removal of around 800 tonnes of chalk to create space for cable chambers and heating facilities beneath the building. The installation formed part of a wider telecommunications network and provided an important link between the Channel crossing and London. The cable ultimately connected with the Post Office’s Faraday Building in London, allowing international telephone traffic to pass between Britain and continental Europe.

Photographs taken by BT during the 1990s provide an insight into the underground facilities that survived at the site. These included a standby generator, toilet and small kitchen, suggesting that the station had facilities for staff who needed to work below ground for extended periods. A domestic-style electric fire and a small television were also present, giving the otherwise highly technical facility a surprisingly ordinary appearance. The station is an important reminder of the early development of international telephone communications and the strategic importance of Kent’s coastline as a gateway to continental Europe.
